PIG HOUSING : CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS USED IN NIGERIA

PIG HOUSING : CONSTRUCTION AND MATERIALS USED IN NIGERIA

Pigs can be reared extensive, semi-intensive and intensive system of managements. In modern pig production, the pigs are well taken care of, with adequate housing, feeding and controlled breeding among the pigs. Pig housing is one of the essential feature of modern pig production. Depending on the scale of pig production desired a suitable layout should be made. Pigs are housed in pens. Pigs are strong animals and can be aggresive when they are hunger. The floor of the pig house should be made of concrete and should be slightly slopy terminating in a trench which facilitates easy drainage and sanitation. The floor surface should be made rough a bit to provide friction. A dwarf wall of about 1.8m high should be built to separate the pens, a door is provided at the front of each of the pens. The remaining length of the wall should be covered with wire nettings upto the roof of the piggery house. This will ensure good ventilation and free air circulation to avoid the build up of odour in the piggery house. Poor conductor of heat should be used in roofing the piggery house. The commonly used materials in Nigeria are corrugated roofing sheets, asbestos and zinc. The inside of the piggery house should be ceiled to reduce heat radiation into the house. Each pen is provided with a feeding and watering troughs. The farrowing pen is produced with a farrowing rail to prevent overlay by the nursing sow.
PIG BREEDS REARED IN NIGERIA

PIG BREEDS REARED IN NIGERIA

In Nigeria Pig rearing/ Farming and Piggery industry are still in the low ebb, hence more effort is needed to create awareness on pig, as pig meat pork is a good source of animal protein. The breeds of pigs mostly reared in Nigeria are the Large White, Landrace, the Duroc and the various crosses of the above named pig breeds. Pigs utilises waste by-products from crops or industrial processing. They are efficient converter of waste by-products of crops or industrial processing into meat pork. Pigs does not utilise fibre or roughages since they do not have cellulase, which is an enzyme secreted by micro-organisms in the intestine that help in the digestion of cellulose, ligins and fibres unlike ruminants animals. Pigs are cheaper to maintain as it can feed on a variety of materials hence its economic importance to food security.

Pig Farming in Nigeria

Pig Farming in Nigeria

Pig farming is an untapped area in livestock in Nigeria, as most farmers focus on poultry industry. Some socio-cultural factors as well as religious belief militates against commercial pig production especially northern Nigeria wish are predorminantly muslim inhibited region. Pigs are fast animals, the sow can farrow twice a year with a gestation period of 114 days.A sow can farrow between 8 - 12 piglets in one birth depending on the breed, nutrition and the system of management adopted in rearing the pigs. Good care should be given to newly born piglets to ensure their survival, they should be provided with a source heat to keep the pig pen warm as piglets usually feel chilled due to cold. They should provided with creep feed which is high in protein content. Piglet should be given iron injection or supplement to avoid anaemia. Piglets are weaned as from 8 weeks of age. Weaned grower pigs should well fed. A (gilt) young female pig can be used to breed as it attain 8 months of life. It should be mated as soon as estrous is observed. A boar is taken to gilt/sow pen for mating.
