Pigs can be reared extensive, semi-intensive and intensive system of managements. In modern pig production, the pigs are well taken care of, with adequate housing, feeding and controlled breeding among the pigs. Pig housing is one of the essential feature of modern pig production. Depending on the scale of pig production desired a suitable layout should be made. Pigs are housed in pens. Pigs are strong animals and can be aggresive when they are hunger. The floor of the pig house should be made of concrete and should be slightly slopy terminating in a trench which facilitates easy drainage and sanitation. The floor surface should be made rough a bit to provide friction. A dwarf wall of about 1.8m high should be built to separate the pens, a door is provided at the front of each of the pens. The remaining length of the wall should be covered with wire nettings upto the roof of the piggery house. This will ensure good ventilation and free air circulation to avoid the build up of odour in the piggery house. Poor conductor of heat should be used in roofing the piggery house. The commonly used materials in Nigeria are corrugated roofing sheets, asbestos and zinc. The inside of the piggery house should be ceiled to reduce heat radiation into the house. Each pen is provided with a feeding and watering troughs. The farrowing pen is produced with a farrowing rail to prevent overlay by the nursing sow.
